Sao Paulo: In the Copa América quarterfinal, Brazilian team defeated Paraguay by 4-3 in the penalty shootout on Friday to make it to the semi-finals. This is the sixth time after the tournament’s format change in 1993, when the team made it to the semi-finals.
The special thing is that when Brazil played the semi-finals from the last 5 times, they have made it to the final. Even in Four of these (1997, 1999, 2004, 2007) tournament it also won the title.
In the opening match of the group stage, Brazil, who looked doubtful, returned to the rhythm by defeating Peru 5-0 in their last match. Even in the semi-final, its players did not give any chance to Paraguay, showing the same belligerent game and reaching the penalty shootout.
11th draw between Brazil and Paraguay
Brazil Copa becomes the 9-penalties shootout team in America’s history. Along with Paraguay, Brazil’s last two encounters (2011 and 2015) reached in the penalty shootout stage. Then Paraguay defeated Brazil. Both teams have so far played 11 games in this tournament.
Gonzalez missed the opportunity for Paraguay
Gabriel Jesus scored the first goal for Brazil in a penalty shootout. In reply, Paraguay’s Denis Gonzalez failed to score.
Brazilian goalkeeper Alison Baker failed his goal by a dive on his left. Subsequently, Roberto Fermino, Philip Coutinho, Marquinhos and Williamson converted their shots into goals for Brazil. Gustavo Gomez of Paraguay missed his last shot, and Brazil won the match by 4-3 in the penalty shootout.
After the match, the head coach of the Brazil team said that the ground situation was very bad. This led Brazil having trouble showing offensive games. Commenting on the field, Tite said that we had to play in a place where the players had to struggle in passing.
