Senior Kerala Congress leader and former state finance minister KM Mani died on Tuesday evening at a private hospital in the city. Hospital sources said that he was 86 years old. He has left behind his wife and six children.
KM Mani was undergoing treatment for pulmonary disease at VPS, Lakeshore Hospital. He breathed his last breath at four o’clock in the evening. KM Mani had been suffering from COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) for the last several years and has often been hospitalized for chest infection.
KM Mani held several records in Kerala state politics and left behind the legacy of presenting the state budget for a record 13 times.
Only some people might have remembered that KM Mani resigned as finance minister on November 10, 2015, after being named in a bar bribery scam.
KM Mani Political Career
KM Mani has been a MLA from Pala Legislative Assembly for last five decades.
Kerala Congress (M) is an important constituent group of UDF in the Congress-led state. Mani has been a key leader in the coalition politics of Kerala for four decades. He worked with six Chief Ministers in the state in active politics.
Political master Mani handled major departments like finance for most Congress-led UDF governments. UDF alternately came to power in the state from the end of the 1970s.
In the beginning of the decade of 1980s, he was minister for a short time in the CPI (M) -led LDF government. Mani, who was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1965 from Pala constituency of Kottayam district, never lost the election and continued to represent the constituency till her death today.
In the politics of Kerala, he was promoted by C. Achutha Menon, P. K. Vasudevan Nair, Karunakaran, E.K. Nayanar, AK Antony and Oman Chandi took over the responsibility of several key departments including Home, Finance and Law, Irrigation and Law, Revenue and Law in the governments.

Born as a son of a farmer in Marangattu Palli village near Pala, KM Mani completed a bachelor’s degree in law and started advocating as a junior of P Govinda Menon as a lawyer in Kozhikode.
Initiating his political career as a Congress worker, Mani worked as Secretary General of Kottayam District Congress Committee before becoming part of the Kerala Congress Movement.
The leaders of the Kerala Congress movement led by K. M. He wrote several books including ‘Fiscal Problems of Kerala-Causes and Remembered Measures’, ‘The People’s Socialism’, ‘The Eighth Five Year Plan-An Alternative Approach’, ‘Doctrine of Toiling Class’, ‘The Economic Development of Kerala’ ‘Toiling Class Theory’ and ‘Political and Economic Studies’.
Annamma Mani is his wife and she has a son and five daughters. His son and KC (M) leader Joshi Mani is member of the Rajya Sabha.
